James B. Garnes, also known as James Bector Dukes, was born on October 26, 1961, in Denver, Colorado. He was a man of many talents, a beacon of strength, and a source of inspiration to those around him. As the oldest of his siblings, he was the one who guided them, often with an air of confidence and a hint of playful arrogance. His life was a testament to the words of Albert Einstein, "Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile."
James's greatest joy was in teaching, whether it was helping the younger members of his family learn to count, master the alphabet, or ride a bike. He had a way of making education fun, an enduring legacy that his family will always remember. He was also a fantastic cook, delighting those around him with his culinary creations. James had a deep passion for sports, which saw him excel in football, basketball, and track. His love for music was equally profound, a passion that was evident when he performed Michael Jackson's "Ben" at a Smith Elementary School talent show, a performance that is still fondly remembered by those who knew him.
James was a loving son to his mother, Cynthia L Redwine Combs, and his stepfather, Thomas R. Garnes Sr. His biological father was John Dukes. He is preceded in death by his grandmother Willie Louise Jackson, his mother Cynthia, stepfather Robert Combs, biological father John Dukes, brother Thomas R.Garnes Jr., and his wife Syrita Henderson-Garnes.
James leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories for his family. He is survived by his stepfather, Thomas R. Garnes Sr., his son Demarco Black, siblings Joseph Garnes, Helen Garnes, Steve Dukes, Chris Dukes, John Dukes Jr., and Charles Dukes. He also leaves behind his beloved nieces Devin Garnes-Martinez, Alexis Diaz (Dominic), Ja'la Thurmon (Cameron), and Jo'Zhjaela Garnes, and his favorite cousin, Margaret Clinkscales.
In the words of Emily Dickinson, "Unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality." Even though James is no longer with us, his spirit, love, and memory continue to live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him. We invite friends and family to share their memories of James, and upload photos to the memorial page, so we can all remember the joy and happiness he brought into our lives.
