Obituary

Charles H. Lewis, Sr., a proud veteran of the United States Army 173rd Airborne Brigade-Sky Soldiers, passed away on December 21, 2025.

The son of Sarah Tyson and James Lewis, Charles grew up in Covington, Louisiana.

He was born on February 10, 1951, and attended Covington Rosenwald High School. He received his GED while serving in the Army. Charles enlisted in the United States Army in 1968 and valued his service highly. He attained the rank of Sergeant. As part of his service, he was awarded numerous medals: Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge 1st Award; Parachutist Badge "Jump Wings;" Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation; Vietnam Service with One Bronze Service Star and One Silver Service Star; National Defense Service Medal; Air Medal; Army Commendation Medal.

Charles Lewis (Skip) was the second of 8 children and first son of Sarah Tyson and James Lewis. The nickname "Skip" was pinned on him by his mother, and it stuck throughout his life. Even those in his military unit and friends know him by his nickname. Skip was baptized at First Missionary Baptist Church of Covington, Louisiana. After his honorable discharge, Skip worked as a certified welder with Equitable Shipyard in Madisonville, Louisiana. At the time of his death, Skip lived in Aurora, Colorado.

Skip was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Tyson-Gallo, his sister Gilda Joy Bickham (Vickie), and his oldest daughter, Tammy A. Lewis. Skip is survived by his wife, Jacqueline A. Lewis, Covington, LA, children: Charles H. Lewis, Jr.-Covington, LA, Deidre A. Lewis, Covington, LA, LeTonia M. James (J.R.), Sumpter, SC, Syreeta M. Wood, Columbia, SC, Rarshard Batiste, Covington, LA, and grandchildren.

Also left to mourn his passing is his uncle Calvin Tyson- Covington, LA, siblings Cynthia Simmons (Horace)- Denver, CO, Calvin Wilson -Covington, LA; Marvilin Lucas- New Orleans, LA, Samuetta Armor-- Chester, VA, Tammy Smith-- Jonesboro, GA, Carol Brumfield- Covington, LA, his "favorite' nephew Aric 'Squeaky' Bickham, and a host of relatives, army buddies, and friends.
