Carl Donnell Johnson, affectionately known to his friends and family as Quick Carl, Smuddy, Harvey Mason, and to his brother Greg as Lee Toddy, was a man of humble beginnings, smart wit, and huge heart. Born on October 12, 1960, in Denver, Colorado, Carl was a beacon of support and an embodiment of joy to all who knew him. His life journey, which began in Denver, also ended there on March 5, 2024.
Carl graduated from East High School, class of 1978. Drawing on his inherent wit, Carl was known for his quick-talking and humorous anecdotes, often using phrases from movies or songs to drive his point home. He was a lover of Jazz music, a devoted fan of football and basketball, and a masterful drummer, carrying his passion from childhood into his adult life. His love for music was only rivaled by his love for his family and friends, which included his lifelong pals Mark Hutchinson and the late Youmer Naulls Jr. Carl, known as the sibling who never got into trouble, was a supportive and protective brother, always standing up for his siblings' honor. He was a testament to the truth of the saying, "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (Proverbs 17:17).
Carl was a dedicated member of the Greater Union Baptist Church for over 30 years. So dedicated to his church, when Greater Union moved into its new location on Xanthia St. in 2010, Carl purchased the church drum set and keyboard. His work life included roles at Stapleton Airport and Dave Cook Sporting Store. Despite his many accomplishments, Carl's greatest achievement was the love and respect he earned from those around him. His heart was as big as his smile; his supportive nature as enduring as his memory. His consistent presence, always with a pencil in hand, was a comfort to those around him.
Surviving Carl are his siblings Fredric Johnson of Surprise, AZ; Rev. Dr. Gregory D. Johnson, and Venita Myres(Jimmie). He was preceded in death by his parents Clara DeGrate and Robert DeGrate; his siblings Michael Johnson, Toni Johnson, and Lumeatra DeGrate (Mimi), and his nephews and niece, Aubrey, Tierra, and Eric Johnson.
